The moving services and van hire industry in Asia has grown over the past few years as the housing and commercial markets continue to expand. Industrial growth over past years, due in part to a steady growth in housing, goes along with corporate expansion and stimulates demand for moving or relocation services.

Companies in this industry provide relocation and moving services from local to international areas, shipping of used household goods, furniture, commercial items and much more. They also sometimes provide packing services, storage services, and van and truck rental services.

In this month’s edition of #TaksuTrends, we analyze the organic visibility of moving services and van rental websites on Google in Hong Kong and Singapore. We have split this into two parts and this first part is for the Hong Kong market.

With help from SEMrush, we have analyzed the website’s organic search visibility and organic traffic trends for a set of target keywords. We listed all the main players based on regional search engines and classified them based on organic search traffic, which explains why they stand out in the search engines.

Hong Kong

There’s always a new building being built in Hong Kong and there is no doubt that there is an increase in demand for van and truck rental services, which can be quite extensive. People and businesses need these services for several purposes such as moving houses, sending goods, transporting equipment, goods and much more.

We used SEMrush to analyze organic search traffic on certain keywords in this field and created graphs to visualize the difference between websites. As expected, some very Hong Kong specific ranking signals appear to be important.

We divided the sites into the following 3 tiers:

Tier 1: The Full Loads

Tier 2: Extra Space Left

Tier 3: Much Unfulfilled

Tier 1: The Full Loads

HK SEO Visibility Van Hire and Moving Services Tier 1

Judging by the results of organic traffic in the graph above, GoGo Van has the biggest organic search visibility in Hong Kong. The biggest challenger for GoGo Van is Lalamove which currently holds second place.

These 2 dominant players compete in the on-demand delivery service, they create separate ordering platforms to match delivery van drivers with millions of users in Hong Kong.

All websites in Tier 1 are superior because their organic position distribution is large for significant keywords in this niche in Hong Kong. The high search visibility of the delivery players also indicates that these websites are more often seen at the top of the search engine results pages.

There is no doubt that GoGo Van is leading in terms of organic traffic for van hire services, which focuses on the transportation of freight and shipping goods in urban areas of HK.

  • GoGo Van: Van hire platform for on-demand delivery of goods and transportation needs.
  • Lalamove: On-demand van service platform that provides same-day delivery and courier services.
  • Canaan: Moving company that offers home moving, office moving, packaging and storage service.
  • Ika: Moving company with a range of services including local household removal, office removal, long & short term storage.
  • Skvan: Cargo delivery service platform including warehousing, office and home relocation.

  • Most of these websites have an in-country domain name (.hk or .com.hk) for the Hong Kong target market.
  • A great visibility in search engines for specific keywords within the industry.
  • Some websites have a blog and a good social presence.
  • The webpage contains heading tags, meta titles and meta descriptions.
  • Some websites have a large amount of backlinks pointing to the site.
  • They have in-country links from other websites within the Hong Kong market.
  • Have target keywords or the brand name in contextually relevant anchor text.
  • Good page speed performance.
  • All of the tier 1 websites have a Chinese version and an English version of the website, which allows them to rank for a much wider variety of keywords across both languages.

Opportunities to improve

  • Secure the website with HTTPS. Not all of these tier 1 websites are currently HTTPs-enabled, which should be a priority in 2018.
  • Increase the amount of on-page text content as some pages appear to have thin content currently.
  • Fix identified broken links.
  • Optimize ALT attributes to all images.

Tier 2: Extra Space Left

HK SEO Visibility Van Hire and Moving Services Tier 2

Many people have used van rental services and moving services in Hong Kong.

In this era, users prefer online van rental services because they are considered cheaper to use in terms of rental fees, they are faster and more practical. These second tier websites also have good organic traffic, yet tend to be outperformed by websites in the first tier.

In the graph above there are several websites included whose traffic has been going up and down in the last few months, such as Total Van and Yamato HK.

  • Total Van: Freight and shipping services platform including rental trucks, vans for passengers and goods.
  • Yamato HK: Logistics company that provides international freight forwarding, door-to-door delivery services, logistics services and domestic – international moving services.
  • Crown Relocation: Moving company that specializes in domestic and international moving/relocation services.
  • A-one HK: Relocation company providing relocation services to individual and corporate clients, storage services, and cleaning services.
  • Yan Yan Mover: Relocation company providing moving services, household goods moving services, storage services and warehousing services.

  • Most of these websites have an in-country domain name (.hk or .com.hk) for the Hong Kong target market.
  • Keyword optimized title tags.
  • Some of the tier 2 players have a good social presence and they have a blog or news section.
  • Some of these websites have a great amount of external backlinks.
  • There do not appear to be broken links across these websites and the internal linking seems to be pretty well optimized also.

Opportunities to improve

  • Optimize page speed performance.
  • Update URLs to be more readable and understandable, both by humans and search engines.
  • Improve meta description tags and include a wider variety of target keywords.
  • Secure the website with HTTPS.
  • Implement XML sitemaps files.
  • Add ALT attributes to all images.
  • While these websites do appear to have a Chinese section, it appears to be less of a priority and the websites aren’t ranking as well as the tier 1 websites for Chinese keywords. There are definite opportunities to increase organic search visibility here.

Tier 3: Much Unfulfilled

HK SEO Visibility Van Hire and Moving Services Tier 3

The third tier consists of websites that have a relatively low search visibility in Hong Kong compared to the websites in tier 1 and tier 2.

If these players improve their websites further, they could very well become potential competitors for the top organic rankings in Hong Kong in the future. On the chart, we see increasing trends for Allied Pickfords and AGS movers in particular.

  • Allied Pickfords: Moving and storage services in Hong Kong.
  • AGS Movers: Moving company that offers moving and storage services for individuals and businesses.
  • Trade Wind Transport: Moving and storage services for international and local relocation.
  • FTC: Moving company that offers local/international moving, office moves and storage services.
  • Expert Mover: A local & international moving company based in Hong Kong.

  • Well optimized title tags, meta descriptions and header tags.
  • Most of the websites have a good amount of on page content.
  • There don’t appear to be broken links.
  • Internal linking and URL structures seem to be well optimized.

Opportunities to improve

  • Add ALT attributes to all images.
  • Improve the quality and quantity of backlinks pointing to the website.
  • Improve page speed performance.
  • Add a blog section to promote business services and rank for a wider variety of long tail keywords.
  • Create a social media presence and social sharing to bring visitors to the website.
  • Some websites in this tier appear to be a bit older in terms of looks and website functionality, improving this to more modern standards could be helpful.
  • The tier 3 websites do not appear to have a Chinese version, which leaves a lot of opportunities on the table for ranking for Chinese keywords and targeting the Chinese speaking population of Hong Kong.

Van rental and moving services can generate more leads by implementing SEO strategies to improve organic search rankings.

Some of the websites listed are subdomains for country-specific versions of worldwide websites, which could be an explanation for their organic search visibility being less prominent compared to the main domain.

The van hire and moving services industry in Hong Kong is growing and we can be sure to see many new competitors entering this space in the future with their own unique concepts and approaches.

A strong SEO strategy which takes Hong Kong specific digital marketing factors into account can increase the organic ranking, visibility and search traffic, and it could help websites in tiers 2 and 3 slowly rise to become real challengers to the current top ranking websites in the Hong Kong van rental and moving services industry.
